How can you keep yourself healthy at work? Tips from our Occupational Therapist

Cheryl Tatler - 6 August 2024

As an Occupational Therapist, I enjoy working people to empower them to realize their potential in their work and home environment, through creating healthy habits and routines.

When you get injured, it has an impact to all aspects of your life - your work life, your home life and your normal day to day activities. As an Occupational Therapist, I am here to support you in all aspects of your life to get you back to doing what you love in all areas of your life.

I often work with private companies completing workplace assessments to ensure employees are working in a safe and healthy way, which has great outcomes for both employer and employee.

Here are a few things you can do in your workplace, to minimize risk of injury and ensure you are staying healthy at work.

Healthy workplace habits that people can implement at work:

  1. Take your breaks! Breaks are there for a reason, and are so important to ensure you give yourself a physical and mental break from what you are doing. Often people skip these when they are busy, but taking a break can also increase productivity in the workplace too - a fresh mind achieves so much more!

  2. Break up periods of prolonged sitting! Try using a smaller water bottle, which will encourage you to get up more frequently to refill and get water. If you receive a phone call you don't need to sit at your desk for, stand up to take it and have a wander around your office space. These small acts can reduce discomfort from sitting for too long, and add some extra movement to your day.

  3. Make a point to get fresh air outside, at least once per day! Can you shift one of your meetings to a walking meeting? Can you sit and have your lunch outside? Fresh air and vitamin D does wonders for the mind and your overall sense of wellbeing.
